I have always been intrigued by crows. The similar appearance of these birds makes it tough to identify female from male and I empower my subjects with the same unassuming designs as these clever birds. Only through sharing similar façades – people and birds – can we detach from the stereotypical comparison to an ever-shifting ‘beauty scale.’ I support a Botticelli Venus who is loud and proud of her form, not perfect as a pearl but confident as a crowing warrior, as all women should be!

Images circle for weeks, months, like those same cheeky crows. When the crows finally land, the stories unfold like feathers.

“Crow Royal,” 2022

Oil, metal & paper on board.
60 x 40 x .635 cm. (24 x 16 x .25 in.)
Whether you sport a crown and gown, or a cap and coveralls, crow like the royal you aspire to be!

“Crow Green,” 2022

Oil, metal & paper on board.
60 x 40 x .635 cm. (24 x 16 x .25 in.)
Your crown might be made of broccoli, not jewels, but that doesn’t stop you from moving forward with sass –
be greener!

“Double Life,” 2021

Oil, paper & metal on canvas panel.
38 x 50 cm. (15 x 20 in.)
Crows are considered “monogamish,” meaning they are socially monogamous but genetically promiscuous. These clever birds are a portrait of deception. Are human relationships equally monogamish?

“Hands Off My Bush,” 2021

Oil, paper & metal on canvas panel.
50 x 36 cm. (20 x 14.5 in.)
Have we reached the end of our imagination? Case in point: one day an influencer decided that a sexy body is a hairless body. And why does hairless equal ‘tidy’ for all genders?
The brain – and bush – boggles!

“Murder in the First,” 2021

Oil, paper & metal on Gessobord.
28 x 35 cm. (11 x 14 in.)
You might be an army of one, but you have unfathomable strength and influence. Take that strong self and slip into your best power suit.
Face your foes and experience
the constructive fallout.

“The Way to a Crow’s Heart,” 2021

Oil, paper & metal on canvas panel.
35 x 28 cm.  (14 x 11 in.)
Food, love and stories, both real and fictional. Tease on (or off) your tightest tights, close the drapes and take flight from everything that holds you earth bound. You know what you need – make it happen!

“Fix Me,” 2021

Oil, paper & metal on Gessobord.
28 x 35 cm. (11 x 14 in.)
Why do we raise the beauty bar to unattainable falsehoods? Why must we augment and extend, flatten and tuck, fill and contour? We aren’t broken and don’t need to be ‘fixed.’ Instead, view ourselves as beautiful in our own unique skin.

“Paper Crows,” 2021

Acrylic, paper & metal on Gessobord.
35 x 28 cm. (14 x 11 in.)
How comfortable are you in your skin? Have you spent a lifetime in costumes that don’t feel genuine? From our earliest memories we are pigeonholed into a one-size-fits-all template. No more cut-out characters for you: discover your authentic self in the clutter of ill-fitting cloaks
and conventions.

“Crow’s Feet,” 2021

Acrylic, metal & paper on board.
40 x 60 x .635 cm. (16 x 24 x .25 in.)
‘Crow’s feet’ is the term given to wrinkles that appear from aging. Kernaghan’s crows are timeless and lovely in their feathers. They carry crow’s feet as a badge of survival where age is a number to revere, not a harsh sentence to shun.

“Naked as Jaybirds,” 2021

Acrylic, metal & paper on board.
40 x 60 x .635 cm. (16 x 24 x .25 in.)
In the Greek fable, a crow dresses himself in peacock feathers, only to be stripped bare and humiliated for pretending to be someone else. Kernaghan’s forms are natural and striking, identical as crows in body and spirit. Slough off the familial and societal templates you are expected
to fit – reveal your authentic self!

“Crow Nut,” 2021

Acrylic, paper & metal on canvas panel.
25 x 20 cm. (10 x 8 in.)
Crows like to play and solve puzzles. From tobogganing down a snowy roof using a plastic lid to tweaking dogs’ tails simply to watch them jump – maybe there’s a bit of ‘crow nut’
in all of us

“Switch-Hit” 2021

Acrylic, paper & metal on Gessobord.
35 x 28 cm. (14 x 11 in.)
When challenges barrel towards you, walls can feel formidable. Switch-hit your perspective: instead of trying to break down barriers, look over or around them. From a different POV, you can knock your problems
out of the park!

“Tune Up,” 2021

Acrylic, metal & paper on board.
40 x 60 x .635 cm. (16 x 24 x .25 in.)
Bad companions are tough to spot and tougher to leave. But leave you will, before more pain and heartache. Crow loudly in support of those with the strength to fly free from their cage and move forward. Return to your community as a powerful
and confidant force!

“Untether,” 2021

Acrylic, metal & paper on board.
40 x 60 x .635 cm. (16 x 24 x .25 in.)
Untethering doesn’t happen overnight. You peek through a telescope and discover life beyond your own. Crack the space station door by degrees, to gingerly test the atmosphere with a toe. Changing course is an evolution,
not a race. Admit one.

“Red Flag,” 2021

Acrylic, metal & paper on board.
40 x 60 x .635 cm. (16 x 24 x .25 in.)
Watch and listen closely to the signs before making decisions that bring more pain than pleasure. When red flags appear, a blossom of bruises, you have the power to reverse your decision. Toss your ring into the crowd and move forward.

“INvisible,” 2021

Acrylic, metal & paper on board.
40 x 60 x .635 cm. (16 x 24 x .25 in.)
Yesterday you were cherished, every smile and word golden. Today you are invisible, lost in a crowd of faceless strangers with only memories to connect past and present. Whether your story is one of silence or sound, unite with those who foster and
value your visibility.

“Toxic,” 2021

Acrylic, metal & paper on board.
40 x 60 x .635 cm. (16 x 24 x .25 in.)
Tumultuous, violent, unpredictable as the sea. Why fight through blooms of toxic red tide? You chart your own course, always stronger than prevailing winds. . . sail into calm waters instead of dodging deadheads in your path

“Crow Boldly,” 2021

Acrylic, paper & metal on canvas board. 23 x 30 (12 x 9 in.)
Be alt. Escape the path. Eat someone’s dust or create your own. Listen to your gut. Get dirty. Be loud. Start your engines and get crowing!

“Crow Bait,” 2021

Acrylic, metal & paper on board.
30 x 20 (12 x 8 x .25 in.)
‘Crow bait’ refers to someone near death, soon to attract a circling of overhead carrion. It is never too late to bounce back and reinvent yourself. Get up, keep moving and avoid the vultures in your path –
symbolically and literally!

“Beholder,” 2021

Acrylic, metal & paper on board.
40 x 60 x .635 cm. (16 x 24 x .25 in.) Beauty is in the eye . . . we are such tough critics of ourselves. Stop spinning for a minute:  what if we look in a mirror and see beauty inside and out? What if we don’t seek perfection but focus on our strengths and distinctive qualities? Strum it, write it, dance it – we are unique and beautiful!

“Bait,” 2020

Acrylic, paper & metal on board.
40 x 60 x .635 cm. (16 x 24 x .25 in.)
Sharks are always circling, no matter how blue the water. Threats come from above and below, sometimes from sharks disguised as humans. Beware what lurks . . . even on a clear and sunny day you could become bait.

“CoRvids Conquer Covid,” 2020

Acrylic & paper on board.
40 x 60 x .635 cm. (16 x 24 x .25 in.)
Crows are clever, especially when
dispatched to rid the Earth of
COVID-19.  Pandemics are no match –
a Roswell-style parody on how humankind must wrangle this virus before it does more global harm.

“Mythos: Birth,” 2020

Acrylic, metal & paper on  board.
42 x 62 x .635 cm. (16 x 24 x. 25 in.)
What if Venus emerged from rust and earth, not scallop shell? What if Venus is less modest and more vocal? Kernaghan’s Venus is loud and proud of her form, not perfect as a pearl but confident as a crowing warrior,
as all women should be!!

“Spy Games: Si Ego Certiorem,” 2020

Acrylic, paper on board.
 42 x 61 x .635 cm. (16 x 24 x .25 in.)
I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you. That’s the translation of Si Ego Certiorem, an insignia created for ‘black’ military projects. Black. Red. For Kernaghan, spying is little more than a game . . . depending on which side you play.

“First,” 2020

Acrylic & paper on board.
30 x 20 x .635 cm. (12 x 8 x .25 in.)
Being first is never easy but ultimately empowering – welcome, first woman Pope!
The smoke clears and the window opens
to a new vision. Caw.

“Broken,” 2020

Acrylic, metal & paper on board.
30 x 20 x .635 cm (12 x 8 x .25 in.)
When a heart breaks, the soul fractures in sympathy. Glossy feathers shift to saws with jagged teeth. Kernaghan’s mixed media personifies the cut – literally and figuratively. What will bring her back from this fiery abyss? Every woman has her story . . . or ten.

       “Eat Crow,” 2019

Acrylic, metal and paper on board.
30 x 21 x .635 cm. (8.5 x 12 x .25 in.)
If forced to ‘eat crow’ and admit you were wrong, Kernaghan has loaded this humble pie with shiny and colorful ingredients.
Enjoy the heavy metal flight!

 “I Am Crow,” 2019

Acrylic, metal, paper on board.
20 x 30 x .635 cm. (8 x 12 x .25 in.)
There’s a whimsical myth that crows like to collect shiny objects. To continue the legend, Kernaghan used shiny objects from her own collecting
an apt title for this ‘pica pica’ piece.

“As the Crow,” 2019

Acrylic, metal & paper on board.
21 x 30 x .635 cm. (8.5 x 12 x .25 in.)
Noisy nuisance or nature’s clean-up crew? You decide. Like art, understanding crows is all about interpretation. Kernaghan is intrigued by these birds – their similar appearance makes it tough to identify female from male and yet crows can recognize individual human faces!

“A Murder,” 2019

Acrylic, metal & paper on board.
20 x 30 x .635 cm. (8 x 12 x .25 in.)
Agents of death? Crows are linked to the magic and mysteries of life. What does it mean when you keep seeing crows? Are you paying attention to the symbols and messages crows bring? Hopefully the only murder is the name given to a flock!

“For Life,” 2019

Acrylic, paper & pearls on board.
40 x 60 x .635 cm. (16 x 24 x .25 in.)
Inspired by crows that mate for life, all brides – like crows – are beautiful in their skin . . . or feathers. This piece is built on a wedding dress pattern, layer after layer of hope and anticipation.

“Tutorial: Paint Naked,” 2019

Acrylic & paper on board.

nobody’s watching!

“Im/Balance,” 2019

Acrylic & paper on board.
40 x 60 x .635 cm (16 x 24 x .25 in.)

Acrylic, paper & twine on board.
40 x 60 x .635 cm. (16 x 24 x .25 in.)
Kernaghan’s graffiti-inspired energetic abstract is loaded with color. The artist invites viewers to fill in the gaps by creating a bridge between perception. Try not to get caught in the everyday swirl of dis/belief.
